Mac OS X provides the Print dialog and programs like iCalamus can integrate own functions there. But the PDF output is basically prepared by Mac OS X and many people think that it cannot be changed.
If you don't like the image print quality in PDFs printed
by iCalamus, the reason might be that your computer still uses the
default settings for PDF output set by Mac OS X. Unfortunately they
are not optimized for desktop publishing. But you can easily change
these settings.
Find the file /Library/PDF Services/Compress PDF.workflow in the Finder and double-click on it. Then the Automator application launches and loads the file. In the right area of the Automator window you will see the action for compressing PDF data. The compression type is set to JPEG with low quality by default.
JPEG is a lossy compression method. Thus you should at least move
the quality slider to Best
. It's even better to choose the
Flate
compression method.
When you open the sub menu Options
and activate the switch
Show Action When Run
, you will see another dialog in the future
when you output PDF files via the Print dialog (PDF
>
Compress PDF
). There you can check and change the compression
method to your needs.
